SAA Update
June 30 , 2008 Newsletter
Looking for film venues, a brief update on the hunting promotion and then straight to the auction results…
Bristol Bay films need to be seen!
Is your club looking for meeting topics? Do you know a local event that would be a good venue to screen a film about Bristol Bay? The story of Bristol Bay and the proposed Pebble Mine deserves to be known by as many people as possible. Please contact me if you are interested in securing a copy of any of the new documentary films about this issue. Visit these Web sites to check out clips from River Poets by Fly on the Wall Travels, Equilibrium by Castaway Films, and Red Gold by Felt Soul Media. River Poets and Equilibrium were selections on the 2008 Fly Fishing Film Tour and Red Gold recently debuted in late May at the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival, where it won the Audience Award and Festival Director’s Award.
Please e-mail the Sportsman's Alliance for Alaska if you have ideas on how any of these films could be shown in your area!
Hunting Promotion coming together…
While most sportspersons are familiar with the threat that Pebble Mine poses to the incredible fishery resources of Bristol Bay, many are not aware that hunting would also be impacted. Indeed, effects are already being felt, as mining exploration crews and the helicopters that transport them are impacting opportunities for hunting caribou, moose and bear in a remote wilderness setting. With support from an Alaska big game hunting guide, gun maker Kimber America, hunting clothing maker Sitka Gear and hunting Web site/blog HuntingLife.com, the SAA will be launching an effort to engage hunters across the nation and worldwide in the campaign to protect Bristol Bay. Keep an eye out for this exciting news in coming weeks. Your chance to be drawn for a dream 2009 moose hunt in Alaska awaits!
Auction Update
The fundraising auction for Bristol Bay has now concluded and we topped $50,000 in gross proceeds! Thanks for all of your support!
Thank you to the blogs, Web sites and magazines who helped spread the word.
This auction was made possible due to the very generous contributions of so many companies, lodges, and artists. Please support them throughout the year. Due to the success of this inaugural event, I believe we will work to make it an annual promotion.
NOTE: If anyone is interested in discussing the trips that did not sell on the auction, please contact me. We might be able to work something out with the lodges that is beneficial to all parties. They were all extremely generous in their donations and want to help the Bristol Bay campaign. Here’s what might be available:
- Trip for four (the only trip for 4 on the entire auction) to Alaska’s Legend Lodge on Lake Iliamna – pick your week in 2009 (could be yours for $9,750 – less than $2,500 per angler!!!!)
